My main concern is the
bringing together of separate elements into a dynamic and satisfying
composition. What fascinates me is the interplay between shapes and colours and
the spaces between them, solid shape and line and contrasts of scale and texture.
All these elements are moved, arranged and played with until, somewhere along
this continuum, a fusion occurs – a magical transformation - and something new
exists, occupying the space with confidence as if it had always been there and
only needed you to imagine it. Hey Presto!
My process of working is
fluid and playful, a form of improvisation involving both intuition and
considered judgement. The shapes may come from many sources: nature, the
figure, architecture or landscape but they remain ambiguous, on the edge of
representation. They work in the same way as the made up words of a nonsense
poem, expressing through their inherent character their own sense of meaning
and teasing the mind into recognizing them. They make their own sense within their
own world.
The materials themselves are not as
important as one’s command over them. I like the idea that the action of the
artist can make art out of anything. I use what is readily available mainly
sheet metal because I can approach it with the same immediacy as cut paper.
For me making art is an
essential and instinctive act. It is a life-affirming process through which I
hope to create things that are a joy to look at. A celebration.
